Universal Module Management Controller for MicroTCA.4 Systems

A. Szubert, D. Makowski, A. Napieralski (Lodz Univ. of Techn., Poland)

The Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture (MicroTCA) standard makes use of an extended Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) in order to create a robust and reliable platform for computing systems in fields such as high energy and nuclear physics. Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC), which provide processing power and I/O functions, are the basic component of every MicroTCA system. Each of them is required to have Module Management Control (MMC) for management, monitoring of parameters, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) information handling and communication with the MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH). In order to reduce the amount of expertise required to design an AMC, some ready MMC solutions were designed and are commercially available. This article reviews the available solutions, compares them and uses this data to propose a novel approach to MMC by creating a ready component to be placed on a custom AMC that would eliminate the need for in-depth study of MicroTCA and IPMI specifications and would shorten time-to-market drastically.
